The Delaware State Police is investigating a fatal bicycle crash that occurred last week in Laurel.

On October 6, 2026, at approximately 4:20 p.m., a Van Hool Charter Bus was traveling southbound on Sussex Highway (US-13) in the left lane in the area of Gordy Road in Laurel. At the same time, a bicyclist was traveling southbound on Sussex Highway in the southbound shoulder. The preliminary investigation found that the bicyclist crossed the southbound lanes to enter the dedicated left-turn lane and, while doing so, crossed into the path of the Charter Bus. Despite attempts to avoid the collision, the Charter Bus struck the bicyclist.

The bicyclist, 69-year-old Lawrence Schreiber of Laurel, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital, where he died on October 11, 2026, from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the charter bus, a 57-year-old man from Jamaica, New York, and the occupants were not injured.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash.  Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to please contact Master Corporal K.
